The Last Word. The name is mysterious enough, but this cocktail’s components blend to create a startling yet fresh drink. This equal-parts cocktail is balanced, fresh, and herbal. Each ingredient serves a unique and essential purpose. Let’s talk Chartreuse first.
Chartreuse, the spirit that could not be more enigmatic, boasting 130 different herbs and botanicals. Chartreuse is made by two monks in the village of Voiron, in Southwestern France. In terms of taste, it is somewhat sweet but mostly herbaceous. You’ll notice predominant flavors of honey, anise, and fresh herbs. There are a few classic cocktails that have Chartreuse, my absolute favorite is The Last Word.

Next is the botanical gin. For many, you either love it or you hate it. For the Last Word, I would recommend going with something heavy on the juniper side, as it will pair well with the herbal Chartreuse. Think Tanqueray, Sipsmith London Dry, or even Bombay Sapphire.
Marashino Liqueur is made from the crushed pits of cherries and has a distinctive flavor. This delicate liqueur often goes well with gin in many other cocktails.
Lastly is the addition of lime. Having a bit of lime in this cocktail adds a needed freshness and helps create the slightly sour aspect of this cocktail as well. Make sure you use a fresh lime, as that will create the most pure, fresh flavor.
Here are the specs for this beloved cocktail:
¾ oz quality gin
¾ oz green Chartreuse
¾ oz maraschino liqueur
¾ fresh lime juice
Garnish: Brandied cherry
Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker, fill with ice, and shake for about 10 seconds. Strain into a coupe or nick and nora glass. Sniff, sip, and enjoy.
